LIVE FROM LOS ANGELES...IT'S TUESDAY NIGHT!

It's taken me nearly a week to write about it, but last Tuesday, October 14th, we had the first of our LIVE SHOWS in Pasadena!

I wanted to keep it very small...and succeeded! But I do have to say that I was very happy with the outcome. I was hoping to do 20-30 minutes on HONOR and FREEDOM...I checked my watch an hour after I started and had gotten through 2 of 18 pages of notes. Turns out that essay-writing voice may be willing to show up under the lights after all. That was the only thing I was really testing that night, and on that score, I was very happy. I could have done six hours without batting an eyelid. I may even be a little long-winded -- who knew?

Anyway, there were eight invited guests -- they'll have to tell you how I did. But I think I'll be doing several more of these -- maybe even 2-3 months worth -- trying out the material for the spoken audience and seeing what works best.

So if any of youse guys is in the greater LA area, and want to make it to Pasadena for maybe 60-90 minutes of William Whittle LIVE! ... well, I'd love to see you there. Just send me an e-mail, and I'll tell you where and what time. Admission is free, and if you buy coffee and snacks the management of the place will probably keep it that way.

On a related note, I think we'll be changing gears a little on the weblog. I'm going to try shorter, less political essays, now that the first book is essayed-out. I think you'll like them. There's so much more to talk about, and I don't want to waste your time repeating myself. And since we're in new territory (and a new collection, hopefully) the one-word essay topic will go away for a while (but they WILL be back).

Up next, VISION BEYOND SIGHT, first of the new collection. And I'm trying to wrap up the publication of the first 13 essays as SILENT AMERICA. It will be ready in time for Christmas. Thank you all for the many deeply moving words of support.

Meanwhile, I'm dusting off the old stuff, trying to boil it down, and if you find yourself in Southern California, drop me a line and catch it in it's larval stage before we head out on the road so I can thank the rest of you wonderful people in person.

I'm glad it's working out, Mr. Whittle.

Congratulations Bill! Will you be heading down towards south Orange County or San Diego to do any larval stage testing? If so, I'll gladly come to see you.

Posted by: Athena on October 20, 2003 09:59 PM

Sigh. I suppose there's no way you'll be heading up to Canada, is there? C'mon, just a short trip to Alberta. It's like Montana, but with better beer. Please?

Posted by: Alex on October 20, 2003 10:34 PM

I had the honor of attending Bill's first night. Bill's stage presentation is just as riveting as his writing, and evokes all the same strong emotions - and moreso. That was the thing I wasn't sure if he could pull off - connecting with an audience. He does it with ease.

Any readers in southern CA - it's worth making the trip. Even from San Diego. Orange Countiers have no excuse. Bill has really got something here.

Nice job Bill. Looking forward to more...

Congratulations on a successful night!

Wish I lived in SoCal. Can we clone you?

Posted by: serenity on October 21, 2003 01:46 AM

So...you WILL have someone there with a cheap video camera soon, right?

You need it for the A&E Biography special. There's only so many times they can pan a photo of the website when they cue the music, you know.

It's also great to see what the experience looks like if you want to improve it.

Oh, and of course, a little video posting somewhere would make a nice teaser...

Bill,

Again, congratulations in absentia.

I'm hoping I'll have things resolved enough to make show 2. Looking forward to it. When I get a spare 10 minutes, I'll drop you an email and let you know what's up.

Don't forget to get the book publisher data out, so we can get our orders in!. I think 2 copies just for me: 1 for the Living Room and one for me to beat up and re-read over and over.

Bill -

Best of luck. I think you're going about it the right way - starting out small, seeing what works, and what needs adjusted when going "live", where there's no backspace key, and no cut and paste.

Bill, I love ya, pal, but coffee and snacks ain't gonna do it. I'm packing four canteens, three days worth of MREs and a fighter pilot's piddle pack.

Lynne, Katie and I had the honor of being among the "invited guests" Tuesday night. As to how Bill did, only one word is necessary

"Magnificently"

Posted by: Barnaby Wainfan on October 21, 2003 07:18 AM

My sister, who attended, said quote "It wasn't quite as asinine as I expected."

Just kidding. When are you bringing the roadshow to Florida?

Posted by: Frank J. on October 21, 2003 07:50 AM

Bill, I hope you'll consider doing a webcast of one of your speeches one day, since some of us are on the other side of the Pond.

Posted by: dr.dna on October 21, 2003 08:04 AM

Definitely Florida! You get to Orlando and I'll be your stree team. Some good pubs this way, too. My treat.

Posted by: Jason Kallini on October 21, 2003 09:00 AM

Did you record the presentation ? If not, will you do that in the future? This would make listening on long flight or road trips.

Posted by: CERDIP on October 21, 2003 09:17 AM

Yeah, it rocked.

There's a story about Mark Twain. Probably not true, but anyway.

Late in his life, he was asked to give a short address to a group that he liked. He asked how long a speech they wanted. Only 5 minutes or so, and the gathering was a month away.

He replied that he couldn't possibly prepare a 5 minute speech in that time. It would take him at least 6 months to prepare a 5 minute speech.

They asked how long he could speak with a month to prepare. He replied no less than an hour.

They asked how long he needed to prepare if he could speak as long as he wanted.

He said "I'm ready now."

Congratulations, Bill! This is one of the few times in my life that I wished I lived in California.

I second the suggestion: are you considering webcasting? (I'd pay to download.)

If your tour doesn't come through Texas, you're gonna have some mighty peeved fans. Fans with guns. Did I mention that you need to book ALL the major Texas cities?

Well, not Austin, it's been infiltrated by the Berkeley Bozos.

Posted by: ubu on October 21, 2003 04:09 PM

Wish I could have been there to see that--snacks? Heck--I would have hand-made all the food and personally CATERED the event.
I'm still up for it, if you decide to take the show to Central Texas... ;-) You have a LOT of fans here!

Well, not Austin, it's been infiltrated by the Berkeley Bozos.

*shudder* Ugh--don't remind me...I lived in that reeking hole for almost ten years. What a pathetic collection of loonbats.
Case in point:
I worked Downtown as a security guard for a few years. One day, as I was walking to work, a distraught-looking businessman spotted me (and the uniform) and dashed up to me as I was passing the front of a busy open-air coffee shop. He was obviously quite shaken and angry. He asks for my help because, as he put it, "A n*****" just held him up and stole his wallet. Yes, he used the N-word--but given the fact that he had just been held up at gunpoint and had his money stolen from him, I can't say as I blamed him. He probably hadn't meant it, he was full of adrenaline and emotion. Apparently that didn't satisfy the self-righteous female loonbat who overheard the conversation as she was drinking her java. She proceeded to dress him down for using racist language. Here he is, still trembling and confused, trying to apologize to this bint for using the N-word. She, naturally, refused to accept his apology and threatened to sue him. I tried to mediate. I ended up gently telling him to go ahead and report it to the police, but that the chances were slim that his wallet would be recovered. She meanwhile started hurling insults at me for not taking her side. I gave up trying to reason with her and left--I was going to be late already anyways...
Oh, did I mention the bint was WHITE, too?
All I have to say is, I wonder how she would have reacted if it had been HER PURSE that had been stolen. I'm sure she would have spent the whole time trying to understand the thief's "root cause" for stealing her money...
Sorry about that, Mister Whittle--didn't mean to go off-topic. It's just that, if you DO come to Austin, treat it like a zoo. You're going there to see the monkeys. Just don't feed them...they bite.

Great, just great... I had to go and leave California....

Well, I'll be visiting in December, so if you're doing it then, you'll be able to count on at least one more attendee.

Posted by: Russ on October 21, 2003 06:11 PM

From just a couple little quips in the comment section weeks past, I was honored with one of the coveted invites. I wholeheartedly agree that Bill's passion and eloquence seamlessly made the transition to live performance, and if you have the opportunity to attend, it is not to be missed. I would say most of the attendees were from OC (as am I), so carpools might even be cards for future performances, either these tune-ups or the final polished product.

Either way, bigtime kudos to Bill, and of course to Mike for planting the seeds in the first place!

Posted by: JohnMc on October 21, 2003 06:50 PM

Please please please give out advance order info on the book while I still have Christmas budget left! (Yes, I'm an early shopper!)

re: short speeches. A famous writer (and damned if I can remember who) added a ps to a letter "Sorry it was so long. I didn't have time to write a shorter one."

Posted by: shell on October 21, 2003 07:04 PM

Mr. Whittle - I hope you understand that any wide tour would have to include a stop in DC. And before people begin to complain, please remember: It isn't just the city of big government and interest groups. It's also the place where the military and intelligence forces of this country work to protect the values that you seem to wonderfully able to remind us of.

It is also, of course, the city of political science and international affairs colleges, and I can tell you the following you have among those of us of the conservative persuasion. So please -- come to DC, or at minimum consider the suggestion of online video. Those who have read you would love to hear you, and those who have not are even more in need.

web-CAST! web-CAST! web-CAST!

At least do a streaming audio show...maybe with an image that refreshes every few seconds, to keep the bandwidth costs low. Or maybe just stream the first 20 or 30 minutes....whet peoples' appetites for The Real Show, "Coming soon to a stage near You!"

Posted by: VRWCman on October 21, 2003 08:23 PM

Bill,

I am a big fan of yours here on the East Coast - any chance that you or one of your guests would have a transcript available of the proceedings?

Looking forward to the book!

Yesterday, Noam Chomsky lectured at my university about how America is a fascist empire bent on world domination. And the man I wished was there to personally put him in his place was you, Mr. Whittle.

So here I'm putting in a third vote for a Florida performance. You can't refuse now, right?

Hey Bill,

Just wanted to add to the congratulations in absentia on the first show. I am glad you are starting small and working out the bugs...that's how the great ones always start :). While I don't live in the people's Republic of Berkely or Austin or anything just yet, I would still be more than glad to see you if you came to Tennessee. Most anywhere within driving distance I would likely be there in fact. I would also like the info on the book as soon as possible, for I too am an early shopper. God Bless you brother, and may our love for America sustain it in spite of all the moonbats.

Bill,

Congrats on on the new beginnings. As a long-time reader and first-time commenter, let me just add my appreciation, AND a vote for your tour to come to the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. I and everyone I know will be there, cheering you on. Not to mention I'll be glad to buy you a beer or three. (I don't drink, so you can have mine.)

Keep the faith.

Congratulations, Bill ! Looking forward to seeing your tour schedule posted soon (with the old canard 'Coming to a stadium near you !' )

Posted by: Joe Lemyre on October 22, 2003 06:59 AM

Mr. Whittle: Re Adam's post above, an excellent and most felicitously named venue for your presentation in the Washington, D. C., Metropolitan Area would be the PATRIOT CENTER of George Mason University, in the Virginia suburbs.

As you are probably aware, George Mason was one of the lesser-known founding fathers (except in Virginia, of course), and the author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, from which the Bill of Rights is derived. What better venue for your presentation (except perhaps Mount Vernon or Monticello)?

The Curmudgeon

P. S. Please, please, ASAP, publication data on your upcoming book!

Onwards and upwards, Mr Whittle, with my wholehearted support. If I can be of any service, you need only ask.

Just go ahead and click on the map, leave your e-mail so you can be gotten in touch with and what you're willing and able to pitch in with. Thanks!

You have a lot to say Bill. I am not surprised that it went well. Just relax and let it flow. I hope proper recordings are being made so your talks can be shared with a wider audience.

If I lived nearer you can bet I would be there for every one.

If you're not going to make it all the way to the Northeast some form of recorded presentation will be absolutely necessary.

I'm very pleased to hear about your progress. I wish I could attend one of your seminars. (If you ever put on one even CLOSE to Texas, I'll drive out to attend.) But failing that, I'd be more than pleased to purchase a video or DVD.

Posted by: Dave Kuwanoe on October 23, 2003 06:11 AM

I'm in central Virginia, but a roadtrip wouldn't be a problem, as long as the show's on the east coast somewhere. Keep us posted on your whereabouts.
I also get the javasript:void(0) msg. Any suggestions?

If you're getting the javascript void problem, try clicking over to my site. In the top right corner of the page (below the banner) is a link to the map. Let me know if that works. Otherwise, email me at BravoRomeoDelta [at] yahoo [dot] com, with your info and I'll put you on the map.

Thanks!

You have a place to stay in Seattle if you ever want to come up here.

Excellent stuff!

Don't forget beautiful Colorado! Colorado Springs, where I live, is the most likely venue, more so then Denver. And forget the People's Republic of Boulder.

I think that there have been some comments to this effect before now, but I think that most of your 'regular veiwers' would apriciate listening to recordings of your talks. Maybe uploading a few minutes in mp3 format to whet the apitite for more. I could add my town to the list of places that urgently need a dose of common sense but considering the way things are in California, well I'm not the most religious sort but it makes me think of that passage in the Bible : Form each acording to their gift to each acording to their need.

Posted by: Tim on October 31, 2003 10:24 PM

In June of 2002, Jerry Boykin stepped to the pulpit at the First Baptist Church of Broken Arrow, Okla., and described a set of photographs he had taken of Mogadishu, Somalia, from an Army helicopter in 1993.

The photographs were taken shortly after the disastrous “Blackhawk Down” mission had resulted in the death of 18 Americans. When Boykin came home and had them developed, he said, he noticed a strange dark mark over the city. He had an imagery interpreter trained by the military look at the mark. “This is not a blemish on your photograph,” the interpreter told him, “This is real.”

“Ladies and gentleman, this is your enemy,” Boykin said to the congregation as he flashed his pictures on a screen. “It is the principalities of darkness... It is a demonic presence in that city that God revealed to me as the enemy.”
That evening, CBS’ David Martin played footage of Boykin making this point during another public speech. “Whether you understand it or not, it is a demonic spirit over the city of Mogadishu,” Boykin says on the CBS tape. “Ladies and gentleman, that’s not a fake, that’s not a farce.”

That’s an unusual message for a high-ranking U.S. military official to deliver. But Boykin has other unusual views. Every school kid knows that our presidents are not elected by popular vote. But why is President Bush in the White House? Boykin has explained that one too:

He has praised the leadership of President Bush, whom he extolled as “a man who prays in the Oval Office.” “George Bush was not elected by a majority of the voters in the United States,” Boykin told an Oregon congregation. “He was appointed by God.”

I'm actually quite looking forward to the first essay of the new batch, to see how you work with a slightly different material. But it's been so quiet here for a while, I'm forced to wonder whether you're posting your new essays at a different site and I'm the only one who hadn't read that memo?
